What is Peak Cluster?
Peak Cluster will play a vital role in decarbonising nationally essential industries, safeguarding UK jobs and accelerating the UK’s transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
Peak Cluster is an innovative collaboration to capture, transport and permanently store carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from neighbouring industries and across Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire.
The cement and lime industry plays a vital role in global society, creating the foundations for everyday life, therefore it needs to decarbonise.
Our Vision
Why do we need Peak Cluster?
By decarbonising vital industries that produce the essential materials our society needs, we will:
- Cut over 3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions from 2030
- Make a key contribution to the region’s net zero ambitions
- Support the transition to carbon neutral products made by local communities
- Protect existing and support new quality career opportunities for local people
- Provide the knowledge, skills and products for future generations that the UK can proudly export around the world.
Who is developing Peak Cluster?
About Peak Cluster
How are we developing Peak Cluster?
Industry is vital. Within the Peak Park, High Peak, Staffordshire Moorlands, Cheshire East and Cheshire West, industry is located which provides jobs and provides an import local economic stimulus.
The cement and lime industry plays a vital role in global society, creating the foundations for everyday life, therefore it needs to decarbonise.
It produces products we rely on in our everyday lives and which are exported across the world.
Peak Cluster will enable the capture and permanent storage of carbon dioxide emissions generated by industry – cement, lime and energy from waste facilities.
The CO2 will be captured in purpose-built facilities situated at the industry’s sites. The emissions will then be safely transported by purpose built underground pipelines to a permanent and secure storage site, deep under the seabed in the eastern Irish sea.

Why use carbon capture and storage?
Peak Cluster will play a vital role in decarbonising nationally essential industries, protect existing and support new UK jobs and supporting the acceleration of the UK’s transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Peak Cluster is an innovative collaboration to capture, transport and permanently store carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from industry in the Peak District and beyond.
Carbon Capture is the only viable and safe method for the Cement and Lime industry to reach net zero.
“Exemplifying the challenge are five cement production sites in the Peak District... There is a huge decarbonisation opportunity, but given they sit outside of the HyNet cluster, it is unclear how this will be realised.”

Peak Cluster will realise this opportunity.
